Each week Mike Angelina will share his picks on the Eagles, a game against the spread in both NFL and NCAA, a Suicide Pool Pick, a 3-team tease, as well as a fantasy player to make sure you start. Follow Mike on Twitter @MikeAngelina
Eagles Pick: The hot thing about the Eagles is their offense, but really they can leave some of that behind for the season opener. Playing against the Jacksonville Jaguars, they actually may not be able to crank up the offensive machine as much as they’d like since Jacksonville actually brings in a respectable defense to Lincoln Financial Field. What makes the Eagles such a favorite for me, and a comfortable pick for another feature in this column, is they are facing one of, if not the worst, offenses in the National Football League. Jacksonville is not even trying to construct the best immediate offensive unit right now, electing to take it easy with rookie QB Blake Bortles. Instead, they will be counting on Chad Henne for the Week 1 match-up. The Jags have gained the least yards from scrimmage in the entire NFL since 2011. They simply will not score enough in this game, so the Eagles are the pick here.
Pick: Eagles, ATS: Jaguars, +11.5
NFL Against the Spread Pick: In a match-up of a good defense against a bad offense (more specifically, a quarterback that won’t strike fear in anyone), I don’t see the Tennessee Titans coming very close against the Kansas City Chiefs.
Pick: Chiefs -3
NCAA Against the Spread Pick: Want an appetizer for Sunday’s games? Watch a pair of top-10 college teams square off. Oregon will host Michigan State, last season’s Rose Bowl winner. Ever look at a line and be able to read it? Sometimes you can see that it is not too big and you get a feel for the underdog. In this case, I see the big line and I’m ready to jump on the favorite. Oregon is a really good team and a machine on offense, I’m not confident Michigan State will catch up and come close. If they don’t make it 28-10 early, I think the Ducks eventually pull away.
Suicide Pool Pick: Hopefully I can make a perfect run long enough to actively be alive and continue giving genuine picks out. There is a thought among people who call themselves experts that you should not consider a team’s future schedule when picking them in a suicide pool. They’re wrong. If you are ever in a position where you have two viable candidates, take the team that has the better odds of being useful in future weeks. When I look at the Eagles, I do not see a more suitable choice to guarantee a win for any of their 16 games than I do this week against the Jaguars.
NFL Three-Team Tease:
- Eagles pk
- Jets +5
- Falcons/Saints Over 41
Fantasy/Fan Duel Star of the Week: If you have to set a lineup for fantasy, or your one-week lineup for Fan Duel or something like that, this is a player with a favorable match-up to build around. This week, it will be Colin Kaepernick, who should carve up the weak Dallas defense. Kaepernick has plethora of weapons and can beat you in two ways: utilizing his many receivers in the air with his rocket for an arm, or just out run you and get six-point rushing touchdowns in addition to/rather than the four-point TD toss.
Start him: Colin Kaepernick
