Each week Mike Angelina will share his picks on the Eagles, a game against the spread in both NFL and NCAA, a Suicide Pool Pick, a 3-team tease, as well as a fantasy player to make sure you start. Follow Mike on Twitter @MikeAngelina
Eagles Pick: Hold up. Easy. Take a step back. Hold your horses. Pick your favorite saying that means “don’t rush to conclusion”, repeat it back to yourself, and then look at this game. Yes, the Eagles should roll. Yes, the Eagles will win straight-up, I’ll even guarantee that one. But, this game may be more challenging than the spread may indicate. Chip may down play the fact that letdown games exist (I guess he missed the Vikings game last year), but the fact remains, this is a huge trap game. The reality is that the biggest game of the Eagles’ season is the one that stands in the shadow of this one, the big one in Dallas on Thursday. Do the Eagles probably roll? Yeah, it’s pretty likely. I just wouldn’t touch it. Afterall, this is a game played by humans, as much as Kelly wants to make it about players just being plugged into a system.
Pick: Eagles, ATS: Titans +11.5
NFL Against the Spread Pick: I’m a trend guy, I think they really do tell a story of consistent predictable outcomes. The Saints’ play at the Super Dome has been discussed at length, and for good reason—they’re that dominant. The numbers and trends reiterate that even more. They are 13-4-1 against the spread when playing as home favorites in the Drew Brees/Sean Payton era. Furthermore, the Saints have covered 11 straight games in this spot, all since winning the Super Bowl. Baltimore is solid, but not better than the Packers. Plus, the Saints are coming off an embarrassing loss, and I suspect they’ll come out ready to rock in New Orleans on Monday Night.
Pick: Saints -3.5
NCAA Against the Spread Pick: This one seems too easy. Marshall, standing at 10-0, still has a lot to prove. Going undefeated would mean a lot, and would bring more attention to the program since when Randy Moss transferred there. This is more than just beating UAB, but collecting style points in doing so. A cover machine of late, hitting on 7 of their last 8, I think the Thundering Herd cover the spread.
Pick: Marshall -20
Suicide Pool Pick: See what I wrote about the Saints in the NFL ATS section. Now, let me add this for the “win or go home” mantra/context of the Suicide Pool: The Saints are 15-3 straight-up in these home primetime games. There’s slim-pickings this time of year for a suicide pool, so this may be the prettiest option.
Pick: New Orleans
NFL Three-Team Tease:
- Eagles -1
- Chargers +5
- Packers +1
Fantasy/Fan Duel Star of the Week: This guy has been licking his chomps to get back on the field. Fantasy owners have been chomping at the bit to get the opportunity to put him back in the lineup. He was an All-Pro last year, and now he’s back: Josh Gordon. Go ahead and utilize him as you usually would, as he is one of the best in the game. Erase those doubts and collect the points.
Start him: Josh Gordon
Picks Record last week: 1-4; Season: 25-24-1
